One Piece motif: Card games

Been a while since my last blog about my favorite animé One Piece. Now that I am back writing, I will explain about the presence of the "Underworld" and the Beast Pirates in the story which I think based on card games.

Let's start with a little backgrounder. Right after the Straw Hat Pirates reached the New World, it formed an alliance with the Heart Pirates in order to take down one of the Yonkos, the rulers of the Grandline. Their target is Kaido, known by his epithet "The King of the Beasts."

Under Kaido is Donquixote Doflamingo, one of the seven Shichibukais or the pirate allies of the World Government. Doflamingo is hiding his criminal acts by joining the Shichibukai system. His criminal acts include slavery (Sabaody Archipelago), production of weapons of mass destruction (Punk Hazard), and production of artificial devil fruits, mostly Zoans (Dressrosa). All of this are part of his role as the most influential underworld broker and his codename: Joker.

His alias is a sign that the concept of the Underworld, as well as the Kaido Pirates, is based on card games. Underworld in the story refers to the system of illegal dealings which elude the control of the World Government.

CLASS SUIT

Doflamingo's groups of officers are inspired with cards, particularly with suits. The Donquixote Pirates are divided into four groups and each group holds a card suit. Pica leads the Special Ops Squad with Spade as their symbol. Diamante leads the Hand-to-Hand Squad with Diamond as their symbol. Trebol leads the Special Ability Squad with Club as their symbol. The Heart seat was vacant as Doflamingo reserved it for Trafalgar Law, his former subordinate.

Doflamingo is codenamed Joker in the Underworld. He is supplying artificial Zoan devil fruits to Kaido, the King of the Beasts. Kaido's right-hand man is named Jack the Drought. The Queen has not introduced yet and Kaido being the King is not confirmed also. We will see in the upcoming chapters if Kaido is indeed the King in this motif and if Big Mom is the Queen as other fans theorized. But for now, let's settle the concept only for Joker and Jack.

In Zou, the advance party of the Straw Hat Pirates who went there battled a group of pirates, later revealed to be part of Beasts Pirates. The subgroup — the Gifters — led by Sheepshead is under Kaido's right-hand man, Jack.

Sheepshead's name came from a card game of the same name. It is a trick-taking card game originated in Central Europe in the late 18th Century under the German name Schafkopf. It is commonly played by five players but in some versions of the game, it is played by two to eight players. The game has nothing to do with sheep.

Alongside with Sheepshead during the clash in Zou is Ginrummy. She seemed to be the second member with authority in that group. When she saw that Sheepshead was defeated, she ordered the group to retreat and report that the ninja, Raizo, is not in the island. Raizo is their target when their boss Jack attacked Zou.

Like Sheepshead, Ginrummy's name came from a card game of the same name. Gin rummy is a two-player game created in 1909 by Elwood Baker and his son C. Graham. A standard 52-deck pack of cards is needed to play the game. The objective in playing the game is to score points and reach an agreed number of points before the opponent makes it.

They are just a few characters, under Kaido and related to the Underworld, being introduced so far. Once a new character appears bearing the name of a card game, this blog post will be updated. Thanks for reading!
